Morehouse school of medicine residency program

Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) exists to lead the creation and advancement of health equity, and by doing so, they address primary healthcare needs through their education, research, and service programs. MSM continues to exhibit excellence in their graduate medical education through their residency and fellowship programs. The residency programs offered are:

·       Family Medicine

·       Psychiatry

·       Internal Medicine

·       Public Health and Preventive Medicine

·       Obstetrics and Gynecology

·       Surgery

·       Pediatrics

·       Neurology

Since 1981, MSM has trained and graduated over 900 students, of which 3 in 5 identify as Black/African American. MSM is associated with different hospitals in Atlanta to provide the best training for their residents, such as Grady Memorial Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

An example of MSM future trainees in their residency program would be Dr. Jamil Joyner. Jamil is a Doctor of Medicine graduate who announced during Morehouse School of Medicines Match Day for the Class of 2023 that he will continue his residency at MSM in internal medicine.

In his speech, Jamil touched upon how MSM provided him the opportunity to grow in himself and his education and how the institution made him feel like he was part of a family.

“MSM is home. Not only is Morehouse School of Medicine the only medical school linked to a major hospital where you can train with a cohort of co-residents, attending, and patients of diverse backgrounds, it is also at the nexus of what the future of healthcare looks like in Metro-Atlanta and Georgia. Morehouse School of Medicine allows me to stay close to my family, not just my biological family but the many classmates and educational mentors that I have acquired during my time at Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine as well.“

Led by Christine T. Charaf, MD, MBA, FACP, the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, the MSM official website states that the Internal Medicine Residency Program "trains a diverse group of residents who will serve our nation in areas where access to quality health care is most needed. We provide teaching, supervision and nurturing that provides all of our residents an opportunity for personal growth and clinical excellence. However, upon graduation our residents are prepared to pursue any number of career paths including subspecialty fellowships, hospital medicine and international medicine," (Morehouse School of Medicine, Internal Medicine Residency Program).

As MSM prepares future health leaders and learners, their residency program strongly aligns with one of their course purposes: to address primary healthcare needs through education, research, and service programs. The residency program provides the following steps to help diversify the health professionals and scientific work and shape students such as Jamil to have the extensive knowledge and community engagement to be a health workforce leader in Georgia and soon nationwide.

Jamil is a prime example of how MSM has shaped him to continue his calling and how he is on the path to being a mental medical miracle.
