georgia and morehouse school of medicine
Georgia isn't just known for their sweet peaches and Hollywood status. Georgia houses higher education institutes such as Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), where they train new, diverse health professionals who will serve the underserved urban and rural populations in Georgia, the nation, and the world.
According to an article published by the AJC, Georgia takes second place in all the states in the U.S. by having the most percentage of African American doctors; however, Georgia houses 159 counties, and there are at least 50 counties with no black doctors. "More than half of the state's black doctors practice in five Metro Atlanta counties, Fulton (605), DeKalb (347), Cobb (179), Gwinnett (172) and Clayton (90)" (Stirgus & Suggs, Trend of fewer black male doctors has broader public health impact 2018) With a total number of 423 jobs, Georgia ranks number 10 in the number of doctor jobs out of all the states in America.
Statistics show that 692 MSM alumni between the years of 1980-2022 are practicing in the state of Georgia.
MSM intentionally finds and trains students from different counties in Georgia to fill those spots and make that percentage 100, along with being involved outside of its campus as the institution is active in Georgia.
